BALLYHOO VISITS HAMMER'S HOUSE OF HORRORS


Produced in 1980, HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR consisted of 13 episodes shot at Hampden Manor House in the heart of England, with directors including Hammer vets Peter Sasdy and Alan Gibson and featuring actors such as Peter Cushing, Pierce Brosnan, Brian Cox and Denholm Elliott. Synapse’s five-DVD set will present the episodes in original airdate order, uncut with all the nudity and violence intact, presented in the original 1.33:1 broadcast aspect ratio.

"THE FLESH AND THE FURY" is the all new, feature-length documentary that explores the cinematic origins of 'Carmilla' (from the popular Sheridan Le Fanu novella), as well as the making of Hammer's infamous 'Karnstein' trilogy.  

The documentary features NEW interviews with interviews with director JOHN HOUGH, co-star DAMIEN THOMAS, film director JOE DANTE, Hammer historian WAYNE KINSEY, Hammer documentarian TED NEWSOM, film critic KIM NEWMAN, film culturalist SIR CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING, Video Watchdog editor TIM LUCAS, author/historian DAVID J. SKAL, writer/Carmilla historian JOHN-PAUL CHECKETT, historian ERIC HOFFMAN, as well as archival interviews with producer MICHAEL STYLE, and more!

For this production, director/producer DANIEL GRIFFITH travelled in London to interview several Hammer 'authorities', as well visit the films principle locations on the PINEWOOD STUDIO lot. 'TWINS OF EVIL' director JOHN HOUGH was on hand to conduct the tour. The team even visited sections of BLACK PARK, Hammer's old 'stomping' grounds.

The documentary itself contains over 200 hundred stills, some of which are 'rare' behind the scenes images from the set. These images were provided by various historians, principally STEPHEN JONES, author WAYNE KINSEY, and 'Little Shoppe of Horrors' editor DICK KLEMENSEN.

Along with the main feature and "THE FLESH AND THE FURY" documentary, the TWINS OF EVIL blu-ray contains another unique featurette. "THE PROPS THAT HAMMER BUILT" is a visual tour of author/Hammer historian WAYNE KINSEY's own personally collection of original memorabilia from the famed studio. Many rare artifacts are on display and critiqued, including the miniature castle from Hammer's vampire shocker, KISS OF THE VAMPIRE.
